We sat down with Pamela Lee, Senior Director of Human Resources at Merit Asia, to discuss how the Merit Asia facility successfully connects our mission with company core values to operate with purpose, resulting in a stronger team and enhanced customer care.
How do Merit Asia employees currently implement each part of our Merit Way core values?
At Merit Asia, we have embraced our Merit Way HEART values—Health, Excellence, Agility, Responsibility, and Teamwork—as a foundation for shaping our culture and guiding everyday behaviors. These values are actively demonstrated through the great work we do and the celebration of it.
Employees are committed to excellence, frequently going above and beyond in all they do. For example, our Regulatory Affairs team shows exceptional ownership and determination when navigating complex challenges across multiple fronts, such as cross-border teamwork, to ensure the physicians we serve are tended to with individualized care.
We then celebrate these efforts through structured initiatives, like our quarterly HEART Award and monthly success story sharing. In doing so, each employee has an opportunity to feel recognized, seen, and valued.
These initiatives remind us that we work best together as a team.
What exciting ways are you planning to expand the Merit Way in the future?
We’re committed to deepening the impact of HEART across Merit Asia through several strategic initiatives, with the goal of incorporating our core values from the very start of the hiring process.
One exciting plan is to roll out interview guidebooks for hiring managers. This structured resource embeds Merit Way elements into situational interview questions, helping assess employee candidates not only for skill and experience but also for alignment with our core values. By doing so, we aim to build teams that are capable and culturally-connected from day one.
Another action we’re taking to acclimate new hires is a Merit Way-focused orientation video. Produced by our Human Resources team, the video captures real success stories of Merit Way implementation from across the region, highlighting the team’s role in driving these cultural initiatives. This video will be a cornerstone of our onboarding experience, helping new hires feel inspired, connected, and aligned with the Merit Way from the very beginning.
How do you ensure employees at every level play a role in the ways your facility carries out Merit core values?
For this, employee engagement is key. We have launched a dedicated council, of Merit employees, to provide a continuous platform for everyone to share ideas and suggestions for further shaping our culture.
This allows employees to have more ownership in what we do as a team and places the Merit Way at the forefront—a guiding framework for how we lead, engage, and deliver value, both internally throughout the facility and externally to our healthcare partners and their patients.
