New Corporate Website

To better serve you, Merit Medical has developed a new corporate website that will enhance your ability to access information about Merit Medical’s business and its products.

1. Searchable catalog – Type key word searches for products and catalog items using the website Search field in the upper right corner of each page, or on the left side of the Products pages. Looking for a particular catalog number? Use the Search function.

2. Filterable catalog – On Products pages, you can filter catalog items according to criteria that interest you. For example, if you want a Performa® diagnostic cardiology catheter with only one side port, go to its page (enter the product name in the Search field), scroll down to the “Catalog” section at the bottom of the page, and set the “# Side Ports” filter to “1 Side Port.” Instead of hundreds of catalog items, you’ll see only a few that match your selected criteria.

3. Lists of videos, brochures, and instructions for use – All of our product videos, brochures, and instructions for use are available in alphabetical lists. To access the lists, go to the “Products” dropdown menu at the top of the website, and select “Videos,” “Brochures,” or “Instructions for Use.” In addition to viewing these items, you can download them from the lists.

4. Information feeds – Now you can subscribe to news and events, blog posts, announcements of newly released product videos or brochures, and career opportunities. Subscriptions are available via email or your favorite feed reader (like Google Reader). All available information feeds are listed in the “About” section of the website on the “Information Feeds” page.

5. Easily shareable product pagesProducts pages each have a “Share” link in the upper right corner. You can use the link to share the page with your colleagues via email or on a social network like Facebook or Twitter.

We’re also working on additional features that will be available in the coming weeks and months. For example, we plan to provide the ability to lookup c-codes for our products, and translate the website into Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. Please let us know, in the “Comments On This Post” below or through the Contact page on the new website, what else we can do to make our website better for you. Thanks!

Practical Training in Vascular Interventions

I recently attended the “Practical Training in Vascular Interventions” course presented by the University of Michigan Medical School at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center. Dr. Kyung Cho did an amazing job instructing participants in approximately 100 procedures over the course of the week. Several of Merit Medical’s products were used throughout the course of the training, including the EN Snare® endovascular snare system. Participants practiced removing several foreign objects from the vasculature using the EN Snare endovascular snare system including IVC filters, embolization coils, and diagnostic catheter fragments.

Valved One-Step™ centesis catheter minimizes the chance of pneumothorax

The low profile Valved One-Step™ centesis catheter minimizes the chance of pneumothorax and fluid leakage. Once the needle is removed from the catheter, the valve in the catheter hub immediately self-closes to prevent air from entering the pleural space. In addition, the valve also prevents fluid leakage onto the patient table or floor.

"The best way to predict the future is to create it."

2011 marks the 24th straight year that Merit Medical Systems, Inc. has expanded its product offering with a pipeline full of new products and line extensions to existing products. This year we launched the ASAP® aspiration catheter in the United States (formerly only available in Europe), TRAM™ and TRAM-P™ manifold with integral transducer, the One-Step™ TAPS (Thoracentesis and Paracentesis Set), the Embosphere® microspheres with syringes made of cyclo olefin polymer (cop), and the Merit Mini Access Kits Non-Vascular (MAK-NV™) with chiba needle. The company’s product development pipeline for 2012 is filled with more than a dozen new opportunities that will help define the future of the company. Peter Drucker, who is recognized globally as the father of modern management, once said “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” We look forward to 2012 and beyond; the future looks positive with many more new products in the development pipeline.

Double Digit Growth in U.S. Peripheral Vascular Device Market Through 2018

Merit Medical Systems, Inc. is a strong participant in the transcatheter embolization market with a broad offering of calibrated, hydrophilic spheres including: Embosphere® Microspheres, EmboGold® Microspheres, QuadraSphere® Microspheres, and HepaSphere™ Microspheres. Embosphere Microspheres are indicated for embolization of symptomatic uterine fibroids, hypervascular tumors and arteriovenous malformations. The company is also sponsoring a clinical trial (HiQuality) titled “HepaSphere/QuadraSphere Microspheres for Delivery of Doxorubicin for the Treatment of Hepatocellular Cancer.”

According to a new report by iData Research, the U.S. peripheral vascular device market in 2011 is valued at over $3.8 billion. The market is expected to grow rapidly to over $7.1 billion by 2018 fueled by sales of many new products and the increased use of transcatheter embolization devices for new indications such as cancer and stroke treatment. “Transcatheter embolization devices, which are used to occlude blood flow within the vasculature, are expected to be the fastest-growing segment in the overall peripheral vascular market,” says Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. “Their uses are going beyond the treatment of aneurysms and other arteriovenous malformations and are being used in the treatment of growths, cancers, and stroke. In particular, sales of particle embolics, which can deliver drug-coated and radiolabeled beads for targeted drug delivery and radiation therapy, are estimated to grow at double-digit rates through 2018.” (Source: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/11/prweb8997564.html)

Merit Medical Systems, Inc. is ideally situated to capture some of the market growth resulting from the expansion of transcather embolization procedures.

MRG Forecasts Dramatic International Sales Growth

Merit continues to expand sales efforts globally with new sales offices in mainland China, Hong Kong and other strategic areas outside the United States. “In 2010, our international sales grew approximately 10% over our 2009 international sales, and accounted for approximately 32% of our total sales.”1 This expansion is timely and the growth is significant. In a recent business wire dated October 4, 2011, the Millennium Research Group (MRG), a global authority on medical technology market intelligence, stated: “… the Brazilian, Russian, Indian and Chinese interventional cardiology device markets are all expected to grow strongly in the next five years, driven largely by rapid economic growth, which increases both the prevalence of coronary artery disease and the funding available for its treatment.”2

Merit has approximately 175 independent dealer organizations and packers that distribute our products worldwide, including territories in Russia, Africa, the Middle East, Asia (including China and India), South and Central America (including Brazil), Europe (some direct sales representation and some independent dealers), Australia and Canada. We believe that our international sales will continue to increase because of our extensive sales coverage in these areas and because of the dramatic industry growth.

Dreamforce Conference and Salesforce.com

We’ve successfully completed the rollout of and training for a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) program called Salesforce.com with our US Direct and European Direct sales organizations. Salesforce.com is the largest and most successful cloud-based CRM program in the world with more than 77,000 businesses currently using the product. The overall goals of this initiative are to find, attract and win new customers, as well as to nurture and retain the customers the company already has. We look forward to a positive impact on our business by the way we interact with customers using this new initiative.

In preparation for the CRM launch, a group of Merit employees from Marketing, IT and Sales recently attended the 2011 Dreamforce Conference in San Francisco to learn (and share the experience with more than 43,000 other attendees) about the new capabilities. The Dreamforce Conference featured outstanding keynote speakers, interactive demos, in-depth discussions, technical training and more. Merit already has great people with the knowledge and desire to be successful; Salesforce.com gives us one more powerful tool to better position the company for success!

CIRSE 2011

Merit recently attended the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) annual congress in Munich, Germany. In terms of leads (potential customer interest in a product) generated, it was one of the most successful trade shows in Merit’s recent history. Most of the customer interest at CIRSE was generated from featured interventional radiology products, such as EmboSphere® microspheres and associated microcatheters, Merit Laureate® hydrophilic guide wires, the EN Snare® endovascular snare system and a broad offering of Impress® diagnostic peripheral catheters and accessories used for peripheral diagnostic angiography and therapeutic procedures.

CIRSE has become the leading European platform for interventional radiologists. This latest event featured more than 200 hours of sessions, interactive workshops and symposia. CIRSE offered more than 5,000 attendees the ideal opportunity to increase their knowledge on image-guided, minimally-invasive procedures and to present their latest research findings. We look forward to a positive impact on our business from the interest generated at CIRSE.

MAK-NV™ introducer system with Chiba needles

As the product manager for Merit Medical’s MAK-NV™ introducer system, I am excited to announce the addition of echo-enhanced Chiba needles to this line of products.

The echo-enhanced needle design and radiopaque marker tip on the introducer provide enhanced visibility for quick and efficient access. For a smooth insertion, the dilator and introducer tip design decreases buckling and introducer peelback during insertion.

Radial Approach–It’s Time for Options

Transradial access for percutaneous coronary interventions is a growing trend that is helping to shape Merit’s radial approach product line. “Transradial PCI has grown from 1.3% of PCI in the US in 2007 to 4.5% in 2009 and may now be over 10%,” reports Dr. Jennifer Tremmel (Stanford University, CA) who believes “this rate may soon surpass the 29% seen outside the US.”

Merit is perfectly positioned to maximize the radial access opportunity by offering several new product options in a comprehensive radial approach product line, including the Finale® radial compression device and the Prelude® sheath introducer. These products complement Merit’s broad offering of ancillary products used in interventional cardiology and provide additional product selection options for clinicians who prefer the radial approach.

As percutaneous transradial access procedures become more popular among interventionalists all over the world, the need for adequate training in the technique will become increasingly important. In response to this need, Merit is also in the process of implementing radial access training programs. Due to our expanded radial product offering and the radial access training programs, Merit is already experiencing rapid sales growth.

We’ll have a strong presence at the show and hope to generate enthusiasm for our products and capture the interest of many new potential customers by featuring several of our recently released products, including the ASAP® aspiration catheter, the Merit Laureate® hydrophilic guide wire, the TRAM™ and TRAM-P™ manifold and transducer, the Prelude® sheath introducers, the Finale® radial compression device, and the EN Snare® endovascular snare system. EuroPCR is just one of many prestigious trade shows Merit will be attending this year.

Global Embolization Symposium & Technologies Trade Show

Merit recently attended the GEST (Global Embolization Symposium & Technologies) trade show in Paris, France. With the acquisition of BioSphere, the company is now a comprehensive resource for peripheral embolization technologies. Many highly qualified leads were generated at the meeting and there was a lot of interest in our products.

Our direct sales representatives in the United States and Europe, along with our global dealer network in other areas of the world, support a broad offering of products used for embolization, including embolic microspheres (Embosphere®, EmboGold®, HepaSphere™ and QuadraSphere®), Merit Maestro® and EmboCath® Plus Microcatheters, and a broad offering of specialty guide wires used for embolization procedures. These devices, as well as the company’s comprehensive portfolio of thousands of ancillary supporting products like sheath introducers, color coded syringes, needles and mini access kits, offer the dependability, predictability and consistency that have become the standard of Merit Medical.

This trade show provided a wonderful opportunity to meet and capture the interest of key physicians throughout the world.

Innovation breeds success

It’s been exciting to see all the new products recently launched here at Merit. At the recent Q1 2011 earnings conference call, CEO Fred Lampropoulos mentioned just a few of the “latest and greatest”. For more than 20 years, the name Merit Medical Systems, Inc. has been synonymous with innovative medical devices used in cardiology and radiology. From the first coronary control syringe launched in 1989 to the ASAP™ clot aspiration catheter that was recently launched in the USA, there has been a consistent flow of new products every year since the founding of the company. As a result of this continual innovation, sales revenues have responded by growing year after year without a single decline from a prior year. I’m even more excited about the new products in our product development pipeline . . . the best is yet to come!

A great loss – Bill Cook

Bill Cook, the founder of Cook Medical, is recognized by many as a pioneer for some of the core products commonly used in cardiology and radiology. His passing will be a great loss to his family, the company and to the entire medical device industry. I’d like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of Bill Cook and the employees of Cook Medical. He will not be forgotten. Antoine de Saint-Exupery captured my thoughts when he said, “He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living man.”
