History

Merit Medical Systems, Inc. was founded in 1987 by Fred P. Lampropoulos, Kent W. Stanger, and William Padilla, a design and fabrication engineer. These individuals combined a unique knowledge of the medical device industry to form a company focused on injection and insert molding of plastics, and electronic and sensor-based technologies.

Merit's first product was a specialized control syringe used to inject contrast solution into a patient's arteries for a diagnostic cardiac procedure called an angiogram. The barrel of this syringe is made of shatter-proof polycarbonate and was designed to address the increasing problem of clinicians working in conditions where there is the danger of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Other products were spawned from the control syringe, and the Company has since expanded its product offering to over 2,000 products.
